You don’t often come across job positions in the AI department, especially in the online poker industry. So, when you do, like we did today, you write an article about it. PokerStars, one of the leaders in the online poker scene, has opened two new job positions for AI experts in their Dublin, Ireland offices. They are looking for a poker AI research engineer.
I don’t know about you people, but I found this incredibly interesting. Poker and AI have a long history together. Many companies and universities have tried to create a poker AI poker that would be capable of beating top players, and they were successful to some extent. We have covered this extensively in this blog post, so if you are interested in learning more, go and check it out.
However, what’s interesting is that for the first time an online poker company has shown interest in developing an AI. At least it seems like so. Of course, PokerStars will not reveal their in-development projects in a job ad, but based on the job descriptions, we can assume that they are cooking up some innovative things.
The job ad says, “With us, you’ll be researching artificial intelligence (AI) and how this can interact with poker. We will want you to help provide state-of-the-art AI programs which will learn how to play and analyze a large variety of games.” If that doesn’t sound like they are developing an AI poker player than I don’t know what does.
My biggest guess is that they want to create AI opponents for an offline mode, or even challenger AI opponents. Players could play against these challenger AIs for a chance to win real money prizes. However, these are all my speculations. For all I know, they might be just doing background analytics with the help of an AI. We won’t know for certain until they come out in the open about it.
Until that day comes, I want to hear your opinions on this topic. What are your best guesses for PokerStars AI? Feel free to leave a comment down below. Also, for more news and other stories from the poker world, visit our website.
